Charles "Charlie" Barr Boyd, 85, of Fairfield died March 15, 2020 at Sunnybrook Assisted Living - Memory Care in Fairfield, Iowa. He was born on September 17, 1934 in Milton, Iowa to William Clarence and Helen Barr Boyd. He graduated from Fox Valley High School in Milton, Iowa. Charlie married Robert Mae Dorson on January 29, 1951 and together they moved their family from Cantril to Fairfield in 1954.
Charlie was a member of the National Guard and was honorably discharged after 5 years of service. He was employed by Universal Producing, Rockwell and lastly United Telephone Company. He transferred with the telephone company to Kansas and continued working there until early retirement. Charlie and Bert moved back to Milton and lived there for 9 years before moving back to Fairfield and eventually to Sunnybrook Assisted Living.
Charlie was the Mayor of Milton and also served several terms on the city council. Charlie and Bert traveled every summer for several years with fellow motorcyclists, visiting many states and Canada, camping along the way. After retirement, they wintered at their home in Mission, Texas, taking their motorcycle and their dog, Pete along. Charlie enjoyed many sports and was an avid golfer. In earlier years he spent a short time as a lightweight boxer. He raised dogs and horses. Pheasant, turkey and deer hunting were favorite pastimes, and he traveled to Wyoming once to hunt antelope. His quick wit and sense of humor will be missed, but have been passed on to his children and grandchildren.
Left to share his love and memories are his wife, Roberta, three children, Paula Wilson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Jim (Kim) Boyd of Keokuk, Iowa, Shiela Gerleman of Fairfield, Iowa; one grandson, Chad Heisel of Greeley, Colorado; six granddaughters, Charity (Ted) Richardson of Libertyville, Iowa, Rachel (Luke) Fenner of Lake Forest, Illinois, Emily (Jeff) Byrn of Des Moines, Iowa, Ashley (Rob) Brown of Johnston, Iowa, Courtney (Ali) Boyd of Dubuque, Iowa, Megan (Tristan) O'Neal of Des Moines, Iowa; 8 great-grandchildren, Kamryn, Braeson, and Elysen Byrn, Tate and Voss Richardson, Ainsley O'Neal, Henry and Hazel Fenner; many nieces, nephews, and a great number of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Helen Boyd; five brothers, Junior, Russell, Bob, Ted, Ray; one sister, Judy Martin; sons-in-law, Bob Gerleman and Bob Wilson; nephew, Rick Boyd; and bother-in-law, George Dorson.
A private family burial will be at Sunnyside Cemetery in Milton, Iowa. Memorial contributions in Charlie's honor may be made to Hospice Compassus, Fairfield Little League and the Alzheimer's Association and can be mailed c/o Shiela Gerleman at 400 W.
