Albia, Iowa - David Leroy Kooker, 81, of Albia, Iowa passed away Saturday, January 31st, 2026, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.

He was born June 5th, 1944 in Emmetsburg, Iowa, the son of Ivan and Vernice Kooker. David lived most of his life in Iowa, residing in Des Moines, Winterset, and Albia.

After graduating from Tech High School in Des Moines, he married Joyce Lynn Strode in June of 1962. David then served his country honorably in the United States Navy from 1962 to 1965, and was stationed primarily in Japan. Following his military service, he was employed as a pipefitter with Plumbers and Steamfitters Local No. 33 out of Des Moines.

In March 1999, he was united in marriage to Beverly Palmer, who preceded him in death in August 2025.

Survivors include his children, Dennis (Sheila) Kooker of McKinney, Texas, Eric (Jennifer) Kooker of Iowa City, and Penny (Alan) Wildin of Winterset; and his stepchildren, Michelle (Jud) Yetley of Coralville, John Scott Blomgren (Kim) of Lovilia, and Joe Blomgren of Lovilia. He is also survived by numerous children and great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include his brother, Ed Kooker, and sister Leona Kirkpatrick, both of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Vernice Kooker; his wife, Beverly; and his sister, Sandy Fischer.

David was known for his easygoing nature, friendliness, and generosity to others. He valued a simple life and found his greatest enjoyment spending time by the river, fishing, and being with family and friends.

In accordance with David's wishes, no funeral services will be held. Military honors will be conducted at a private family burial.

The family extends their sincere gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Monroe County ER, and at Blessing Hospital for their exceptional care, compassion, and support during David's final days.
