Unionville, Iowa - Doris Irene Burkhalter, 95, of Unionville, formerly of Ottumwa,, died at 7:20 p.m. September 18, 2025 at Golden Age Care Center in Centerville.

She was born September 9, 1930 near Blakesburg to Walter C. and Alice M. Robb Ellison. Doris married Paul Dillon Burkhalter on February 14, 1948 and he preceded her in death on July 29, 2011.

Doris worked for Kresges, sold Avon and retired from Bashes Super Market in Arizona in 1991.

She was a member of Living Hope Bible Church in Eldon, over 50 years member of Order of Eastern Star and a member of Unionville Club.

Doris enjoyed crocheting, quilting and playing Bingo and other games.

Surviving are her children, Linda Burkhalter of Centerville, Debby (Fred) Avila of Des Moines and Craig (Dorene) Burkhalter of Nashville, TN; 6 grandchildren, Missy (Trent), Angie Clark, Jeni (Jason) Sprague, Charles Burkhalter, Abbey Adams, Richard Dillon Burkhalter; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Frank Burkhalter and Bobby Burkhalter; a granddaughter, Lisa; and four brothers, Donald, Harold, Carl and Claudie Ellison.

Visitation is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, September 22nd, at Reece Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Septembe 23rd, at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Chris Childs officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The family will be present to greet friends 1 hour prior to the service Tuesday.
