Arlington Heights, IL - Dorothea (Dottie) Cioban Barber of Arlington Heights, Illinois, died on August 18, 2025. She was born to Leo Cioban and Mae Caviness Cioban on January 4, 1942, in Dodge City, Kansas.
After earning a Master of Science Degree from the University of Nebraska, she served as a reading services specialist with the Omaha Nebraska Public Schools for many years. She enjoyed opera and volunteered in several theater activities including costume design. Her weekends usually included dancing at the many places in Omaha with music and a dance floor. A life-long interest in art photography led her to study with Larry Ferguson's studio in Omaha. After retiring to Hot Springs, Arkansas, Dottie joined the art community there and her photographs were displayed in one of the art galleries along Central Avenue.
Dottie's love for nature was obvious in her dedication to cats, birds, squirrels...any creature needing help. That love is expressed in a favorite poem by Walt Whitman which states, "I think I could turn and live with animals."
She is survived by a daughter, Denise (Larry) McHaney, four grandchildren, Lauren (Andrew) Childers, Peter (Bailee) McHaney, Brian Mc Haney, Grant Mc Haney, two great grandchildren, and a sister, Jean Parsons. She was close to many nieces and nephews throughout her life. Her parents and two sisters, Dianne Plowman and Kay Wright, preceded her in death.
At her request, final arrangements are private.
