Edna Louise Versteegh, 88, passed away December 24th, 2020 at home in Sun City, Arizona, surrounded by her family under the care of Hospice. Edna was born January 31, 1932, in Searsboro, Iowa, to Rufford and Susie Taylor Pothoven. She was a graduate of New Sharon High School. On December 10, 1950 she was united in marriage to Paul James Versteegh at the Presbyterian Church in New Sharon, Iowa. She and Paul celebrated 70 years of marriage together in December of 2020.
She was a dedicated homemaker and enjoyed her jobs at the Fremont Funeral Chapel, Lunsford Grocery, and working the local elections in Fremont, Iowa. She also enjoyed time spent with friends at the Fremont Community Center in the mornings.
Edna was an active member of the Fremont Methodist Church and in the Methodist Women's Circle groups supporting the local community. Her passion was quilting, lovingly making quilts for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She also made numerous quilts for friends and charities. She loved sports, never missing games for the Iowa and Arizona universities she followed. She also loved golf; Phil Mickelson was her favorite golfer. She loved to play cards, actively participating in a monthly card club with friends and neighbors for more than 50 years. Family was very important to Edna; family gatherings with meals for 30 or more were common and enjoyed by all. Her canned sweet pickles were a family favorite; no visit to home was complete without picking up a jar of pickles. One of her favorite leisure activities was travel, including numerous cruises with family members.
Those left to honor her memory include her husband Paul; children Cathy and Darrell Sams of Indianola, Iowa; Barry and Virginia Versteegh of Cedar, Iowa; Bruce and Diane Versteegh of McKinney, Texas, and Ron Versteegh and Cheryl Wilms of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Max Pothoven and Floyd Pothoven, her sister Nadine Pothoven, and her grandson, Taylor Versteegh.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. in the Fremont United Methodist Church, with graveside a service following at the Cedar Township Cemetery in Fremont. According to the rules put in place by the Iowa Department of Public Health, proper social distancing and reasonable personal protective equipment is advised for attending a religious public event. The funeral service will be live streamed at the Bates Funeral Home's YouTube Channel for those wishing to support the family from a distance. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 5, starting after 1:00 p.m. at the Fremont Funeral Chapel with the family present from 5:00-7:00 p.m. to greet relatives and guests. Memorial donations / in lieu of flowers may be made to the Fremont Community Center, Fremont United Methodist Church, Cedar Township Volunteer Fire Department, or the Mahaska County Hospice
