Richard Lee Martsching (Dick) Obituary

Caldwell, Texas - Richard "Dick" Martsching, formerly of Ottumwa and Agency IA, passed away on June 13, 2025 from complications of a stroke. He was residing with his son, Jeff (Jackie) Martsching in Caldwell, TX.


Dick was born November 3, 1934 to George & Helen (Ratka) Martsching Workman in Oskaloosa, IA. He was raised by his grandparents, Andrew and Mary (Rogan) Ratka residing at 714 E. Williams, Ottumwa.


Dick married Donna Toomire on August 25, 1956. They were together 22 years and raised 3 children, Gregg, Jeff, and Cindy in Agency, IA. Dick Married Joy Hults on May 3, 1980 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ottumwa.


Dick served with the Iowa Army National Guard 224th Engineering Battalion, retiring S.F.C. Platoon Sgt. in 1977 after 25 years of service. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, 1952 graduate of OHS, and an avid golfer and Hawkeye fan. Dick worked at John Morrell & Co. As an industrial engineer until 1973. He was an industrial engineer at Chamberlains in Albia, later transferring to Chamberlains in Hot Springs AR until he retired in 2000.


While living in Agency, Dick served as mayor, city councilman, and volunteer fireman. Dick also coached and umpired little league baseball and softball, and refereed Cardinal H.S. football. He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his family.


Dick is survived by Joy, his wife of 45 years, his children Gregg (Lily) Martsching of Auburn CA, Jeff (Jackie) Martsching of Caldwell TX, Cindy (Jeff) McCutcheon of Ogden IA, Joy's children Jennifer (Matt) Crowe of Dubuque IA, Matt (Lynne) Hults of Cotteville MO, 13 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, plus one on the way. Dick is survived by his brothers, Bob Workman of Sioux Falls SD and Larry (Linda) Workman of Urbandale IA, his sister Judy of Ottumwa IA, and sister-in-law Cheryl Smith of Charles City IA.


Dick was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, uncles & aunts Ed & Marie Taylor, John and Mabelle Martsching, Richard E. Ratka (who he was raised with), sister-in-law Jan Workman, and step-father Robert A. Workman.


Per his wishes, Dick was cremated. There will be a 10:00 AM visitation and 11:00 AM memorial service on July 19, 2025 at Trinity Lutheran Church in

Ottumwa IA.
